Okay, here's my take: Life is like a path that leads through dark tunnels. But the dark tunnel is always covered, protected from the elements and has an end. How's THAT?

Here's another metaphor.
Life is like a tunnel. You can drudge along in the hot sun all day and take refuge for a time in a cool tunnel. (Okay, I'm grasping for straws here.)
